Haecksen Call For Papers

Introduction: The Haecksen miniconf is primarily intended for women who develop, administer and play with FLOSS and associated hardware. It will run on Monday, the 18th of January, 2010. Historically this has been the Linuxchix miniconf, but the organisers felt that this did not reflect the full range of ways in which women in Australasia and the wider Pacific area engage with these technologies. In its place, we decided to use 'haecksen' - the feminine plural in German for 'hacker'.*

We would like to encourage a mix of listening and participation. As such, please contact us if you are interested in running a panel or discussion.

Suggested Topics: smart crafting, usability, cloud living, professional development, loyalty tax, community management, best practices, documentation, impostor syndrome, virtualisation, computer security, social engineering, fashion technology, hardware hacking, how to submit your first patch.

However! This should not imply that topics not on the list are not welcome. This miniconf is, in brief, looking for women doing interesting stuff with interesting technologies. This may mean you.

Submissions: To submit a talk to the Haecksen miniconf, you can do it via haecksen.org.nz or mail miniconf@haecksen.org.nz with your name, the title of the talk, and a brief abstract. An organiser may contact you to request further information if needed.

Talks can be full length at 40 minutes, half length at 20 minutes, or a lightning talk. If you submit your talk via email please remember to note if you will allow Linux Australia to record your talk.

Inexperienced speakers are encouraged to submit.

Important Dates: The CFP closes at midnight October 25th 2009. Selected talks will be announced at the beginning of November 2009.

* Hacker can be a somewhat ambiguous term, especially when used in mainstream media. The usage here derives from the "person who likes messing about with stuff" definition, rather than the "person who gains unauthorised access to stuff".
